 Clinical supervision

What is clinical supervision?

A formal process that enables, guides and facilitates the professional to meet organisational, professional and personal objectives. These objectives include professional competence, accountable and safe practice, continuing professional development, education and support.

Indigenous-led clinical supervision to Indigenous practitioners.

It is important to recognize that clinical supervision from non-Indigenous practitioners may not always be culturally safe or effective for Indigenous practitioners. Non-Indigenous people may not take into account cultural differences and may not be as effective in addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by Indigenous practitioners. And may also lack the cultural safety and respect that is crucial for Indigenous practitioners to feel comfortable in discussing their work, and seeking support.

Indigenous-led clinical supervision is unique in its approach because it is grounded in cultural safety and respect for Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. Tanya provides a safe and culturally appropriate space for Indigenous practitioners to discuss their work and address any issues or challenges they may be facing. Tanya also recognizes the importance of community and family in Indigenous cultures and may involve the participation of Elders or other community members in the supervision process.

Tanya's passion for Indigenous-led supervision stems from her personal experience of feeling unsupported, isolated and unheard in her career. Tanya had recognized a gap in the availability of competent Indigenous-led supervision and was motivated to pursue a career in this field to address this issue. Tanya's ultimate goal is to bring about positive change and ensure that her community thrives by providing the necessary support and guidance, with her expertise and leadership, Tanya hopes to empower individuals to reach their maximum potential and contribute to a brighter future for Indigenous communities.

Indigenous-led clinical supervision to non- Indigenous practitioners

Through Indigenous-led clinical supervision, non-Indigenous practitioners can gain a deeper understanding of the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, systemic racism, and intergenerational trauma that may be impacting Indigenous communities. This understanding can help them to provide more culturally sensitive and appropriate care to Indigenous clients and co-workers, as well as foster more respectful and collaborative relationships to enhance their ability to work effectively within the Indigenous communities.

Participating in clinical supervision, particularly from an Indigenous perspective, can provide non-Indigenous practitioners with valuable insight and understanding. It allows them to appreciate Indigenous culture and the unique challenges that Indigenous practitioners may face in their every day living
